Despite an extremely abusive first marriage to a fellow Motown artist and being signed in her teens by Motown’s Berry Gordy after demanding she sang to him in a restaurant, Charlene went on to sell over 18 million units worldwide with the stunning classic ‘I’ve Never Been To Me’ – a track written for her by the late great Ron Miller (‘Touch Me In The Morning’, ‘For Once In My Life’ etc) which she followed up with a phenomenally successful duet with Stevie Wonder ‘Used to Be’. She was the first white artist to be signed to Motown. Fans of the hit TV show ‘Desperate Housewives’ have had the opportunity to be reintroduced to ‘I’ve Never Been To Me’ when it was featured recently. Fans of the track inundated the TV network both in the US and UK asking if the song was to become available.
In 2007 the musical of the cult movie ‘Priscilla Queen Of The Desert’ opened in Sydney, Australia and the producers brought Charlene to Oz to promote the show as the song opens the musical and features very strongly throughout. She undertook, press, radio and TV appearances to promote the show and, now the show is due to open in the West End in the Autumn (produced by Andrew Lloyd-Webber) Charlene has once again been engaged to undertake promotion for the show. She has even been asked to appear in the show to sing the song live. In the subsequent years since being signed to Motown, Charlene has continued to undertake extensive live work throughout the world – collecting a massive following after performing tirelessly at Gay Pride Festivals and events. ‘I’ve Never Been To Me’ has become quite a gay anthem and Charlene performs a high-energy version in her live set. This version has now been recorded as a single and will be released in early July 2008 throughout the world. Entitled ‘I’ve Never Been To Me’ it has been reworked by dance mix supremo Robert de Frenes and is by Eye Witness featuring Charlene.
